ABOUT DOCTOR WAYNE G. SMITH
Dr. Wayne is the eldest of seven children. He has 4 brothers and 2 sisters. His mother Barbara and his father Harmon hail from Reading, Massachusetts where they grew up as childhood sweethearts and later married.
Dr. Wayne has had a Chiropractic influence in his life since he was young. His Chiropractic introduction began with his father. His father, Harmon Smith, just 29 years old at the time, had a life changing experience because of Chiropractic. He injured his back helping a friend move a pool table. He had been told that it was just a strain and it would resolve, but it didn’t. Five days later, his father lost use of his legs and was wheel- chair bound! Despite months of therapy, his condition worsened and he remained in excruciating pain. His father was eventually told his condition warranted surgery. Unfortunately, even with surgical intervention, there were no guarantees…and his prognosis was not good. As one can imagine, this was an extremely difficult situation for the Smith family. Harmon was the sole provider for his wife and their 5 children. In a move of sheer desperation and at the prompting of a next door neighbor, he went to see a Chiropractor. His condition was such that he had to be carried into the Chiropractor’s office and placed on the table. What happened next is seemingly nothing short of a miracle. After his Chiropractic adjustment, his father was able to get off the table, with some assistance. His father rested for about 15 minutes after the adjustment and was able to walk out of the office. He was still in a great deal of pain but was able to move about unassisted. His Chiropractic regimen consisted of 3 visits per week for 8 weeks. As a result of the Chiropractic care he received, his condition completely resolved. His father, then an Electrical Engineer, was moved to change the direction of his life’s path as the result of this Chiropractic experience. He sold the family home, packed up his wife of eleven years, Barbara, and their 5 kids, 2 dogs and a cat and moved to Davenport, IA. He then enrolled himself in Palmer College of Chiropractic. He practiced Chiropractic for 27 years.
As a young man of 19 years old, Wayne Smith, enlisted in the USAF at the Boston Recruiting Center in December 1977. He was trained as an Air Traffic Control Specialist and spent the next 6 ½ years on active duty. Throughout his years in the Air Force, he was stationed in Mississippi (Biloxi), Arkansas (Little Rock), Panama, Greenland and, South Carolina (Sumter). Upon leaving active duty he enlisted in the Air National Guard and remained there serving as a “weekend warrior” until his retirement in May 1997. Upon retirement from active duty, he applied to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to work as an Air Traffic Controller. He was later hired and worked at Washington Center ARTCC until his activation for Operation Desert Storm in 1990. After 6 months on active duty his tour ended. Upon completion of his tour as part of Operation Desert Storm, he was sent back home. When he returned home, he decided to resign from the FAA so that he could follow in his father’s footsteps and become a Doctor of Chiropractic.
Dr. Wayne attended Sherman College of Chiropractic. He earned his degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic in 1998 and joined his father’s practice in Spartanburg, SC. Dr. Wayne practiced Chiropractic in SC for 12 years---until he decided to return to his roots in New England. His desire to return to New England was blessed with his introduction to Dr. Molly Keefe who happened to be looking for an Associate Doctor and the rest is recent history. Dr. Wayne, the newest member of the team at Back To Health Family Chiropractic, joined the practice in February 2009. He looks forward to having his family join him in Vermont once the 2010 academic year finishes.
